A Report Of My Au.D Experience

  • I recently completed my Doctor of Audiology, Au.D, degree via distance learning. This is a report of that experience. I published this report because I wanted to encourage eligible audiologists to earn their degree. As you will read, the Au.D experience was very beneficial to me and I am proud of the accomplishment. I received my degree in August 2004. By reading this report you will get information about:

    • Why I decided to earn the degree
    • Why it is important for audiologists to earn the Au.D.
    • Why I chose ASHS for the degree
      • How the degree affected my practice
      • What were the time requirements
      • What were the high and low points in the experience
    • Special insight into how ASHS delivers their program
    • Statistics about the current success of the Au.D. distance learning experience
      • How many audiologists have earned the degree through distance learning
      • How many are currently enrolled in distance learning programs
    • On October 9th, I added a Frequently Asked Question, FAQ, section at the end of the report to help with some of the more often asked questions. Also added was a short section of reader comments.

  • A version of this report was also published in the October 25th issue of the online magazine, Audiology Online. Thanks to Dr. Douglas Beck, Audiology Online Editor in Chief, for helping prepare the article. If you wanted to view this version, the article was hosted at this address: http://www.audiologyonline.com/articles/arc_disp.asp?id=1209&catid= I will try to keep this link current, but you can also download the report directly from the links below. See the next section for more information
  • I added additional information to the report after it was submitted for publication. This latest version also has pictures not included in the Audiology Online version. You can read the updated version of the report by clicking one of the two links below:
    • There are two version of this file, a high and low resolution. High resolution looks great on screen and prints very nicely, and the low resolution version downloads quickly and looks OK on screen. They have exactly the same text. Click the link below to download the version you want.

Starkey DP2000 Quick Test Instructions

  • I recently wrote a set of quick test instructions for use in my office. Below I posted a link to download this file.
  • I am providing this file FREE of Charge! Feel free to distribute it to fellow DP2000 users.
  • The four color instructions print very nicely on 8.5" X 11" paper using the front and back. You can then laminate it and keep it by the computer. The sheet is handy for teaching new users how to measure distortion product emissions using the DP2000.

DPgram: Audiometric threshold Vs DPOAE Level

  • I recently pulled a slide from Dr Gorgia's 2007 ASHA instructional course in distortion product otoacoustic emissions. I wanted a quick reference that I could use when interpreting DPOAE's using the Boys Town data.
  • I am providing this file FREE of Charge!
  • The four color slide prints very nicely on 8.5" X 11" paper. On the back side you should print the interpretation and source for the slide. You can laminate it and keep it by the computer. The sheet is handy for reviewing the range of thresholds for DP recorded at the following frequencies 750Hz-8000Hz.

APD 1.0 Learning Tool

This is a FREE application I created to help parents, teachers, and other professionals understand Auditory Processing Disorder. There are three main sections:

  • What is Auditory Processing Disorder, APD and how does it compare to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD
  • Why and how do personal FM systems help with APD. There are several sound samples that demonstrate different signal-to-noise ratios, SNRs, and should be helpful in understanding and explaining SNR. Personal FM systems improve SNRs in the classroom and are an important tool in helping some children with APD.
  • Printable high resolution fact sheets in the form of pdf documents which can be viewed on your computer and printed out for personal use. These include
    • Two documents for parents and professionals
      • One compares and differentiates APD from ADHD,
      • A second explains the use personal FM systems in the classroom.
    • A step by step guide for audiologists that wish to deploy a personal FM system in the classroom. This document talks about APD profiles and gives specific recommendations for tests and post treatment tools to insure personal FM system success in the classroom.
    • A four color brochure for parents with a child that is going to see the audiologist for APD testing. This document takes a step-by-step approach to informing parents about APD testing.
    • A tip sheet with strategies to use in the home for parents of children with APD
    • A section, Web Links, was added 4/23/2004 to the reference area. This section will provide a list of current web site addresses with additional information on CAPD.
