Change in hearing aid
battery pricing coming
There hasn't been an increase
in our battery pricing for nearly two decades. Recently we've experienced
problems with the 10a battery used in Complete-In-The-Canal aids
and many of the Open Fit products. We've worked hard with our
current manufacturer, ICellTech, but ultimately we feel the best
solution is to move to a different vendor. You will notice that
the price for single packages increased from $3.00 to $3.25 for
the most common sizes. The 10a battery will also go up $0.25
from $3.25 to $3.50 a package. To learn more, download our money
saving battery coupon here.
We've contacted and exchanged the 10a batteries for everyone that previously purchased suspect batteries, but if we missed you please call the office and let us know. Thanks

Gillian attends Texas
workshop
It
was 17 degrees when I flew out of Klamath. A few short
hours later, I arrived in Austin, where it was a balmy 83 degrees.
Sadly, that warmth didn’t last long. By the next
morning, it was rainy and cold. A perfect day to stay indoors!
I wasn’t in Texas to soak up sun anyway. There was
a conference to attend, and things to learn.
On March 11, I attended the E-A-R Hearing Conservation Seminar in Austin, Texas. It was a full day of instruction on hearing protection and conservation, with emphasis on prevention of hearing loss. Focusing mostly on industrial hearing conservation programs, the seminar refreshed my knowledge on the mechanics of hearing and the science of hearing protection. As the saying goes, you don’t know what you have ‘til it’s gone. This truly applies to hearing. Many people put very little thought into protecting their hearing until damage is done. It was a very informational and entertaining seminar. I would highly recommend it to anyone involved in hearing conservation. You can find out more by clicking here to visit the E-A-R web site.

Our new building is ready!
Today was very special because it marked the end of a project that we began two years ago. I've chronicled the journey on this page. Today we received our final building inspection and certificate of occupancy. Tomorrow and Monday the office will be closed while we move to the new location. We will be open again on Tuesday April 2nd. While not every detail is done, we can finally occupy. Here is the new address:

Gillian and Haley attend workshop at Sonic Innovations Lab in Minneapolis, MN.
This summer Gillian and Haley spent several days in Minneapolis. It was a great opportunity for them to meet staff members from Sonic Innovations and to tour their facility. I placed their comments about the trip below:

Gillian:
In December of 1999, I had the opportunity to tour a hearing aid lab to see first hand how a hearing aid comes into existence. The visit gave me a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into creating a hearing aid. Nine years later, I was able to tour Sonic Innovations in
Haley:
My experience at the Sonic Innovations lab was very fascinating. To my surprise, most of the hearing aid manufacturing process is done by hand. The staff had such amazing skill and coordination they actually made the process look simple, which I know it was not. Every staff member was also very friendly and went out of their way to make me feel welcome. I gained a whole new appreciation for the hearing aid manufacturing process. I knew each hearing aid was custom made but had no idea each hearing aid was custom made by the hands of such skilled craftsmen with very little mechanization involved. I was impressed at the amount of organization and dedication to detail shown in every step of the process. I am thankful for the opportunity to experience the Sonic Innovations lab and greatly appreciated the chance to meet such wonderful people and expand my knowledge of the hearing aid manufacturing process.

New Reduced Cost On Hearing Aid
Batteries
Last fall we began using a new
supplier for hearing aid batteries. I am happy to report that
the new supplier continued to deliver the same high quality battery
you've always purchased from our office. In addition, we were
able to add two additional batteries per package without raising
the price! That's right, for a little at $3.00 a package, you
can purchase 6 batteries. In case quantities, batteries are as
little at 0.37 cents each. For more information, click here to visit the download page. There you find a money saving coupon
and learn how to start saving money on your hearing aid batteries

Doctor Of Audiology Au.D. Completed
I've received many emails asking
why the web site updates were slow coming last year. Well, I
was working hard to complete a journey that I started two years
ago to upgrade my credentials. For the past two years I worked
and studied so that I could earn my Doctor of Audiology, Au.D.,
degree. The graduation ceremony was in Tempe AZ August 2004.
I am very proud of earning this degree as well as seeing how
the effort helps our office serve you better!
The Master's degree that I graduated with in 1987 will be phased out of most academic programs by the end of this year. Our professional organizations decided that clinicians needed to replace this older academic degree with a professional degree that would prepare clinicians to better serve the public. During this unique transition period that began in the late 1990's, I was allowed to earn this degree without leaving my practice. During the day I saw patients in the office, and at night I participated in a distance learning program through the Arizona School of Health Science School of the A.T. Still University of Health Sciences. The new professional degree, Au.D. exceeds the academic and training of all previous degrees. Unlike the Ph.D. that focuses on research, the Au.D. is a professional practice degree. For more information about what Doctors Of Audiology do, download this short informational pdf here.
If you would like to know more about my experience in the Au.D program, I published a report last year. Click here to visit the link and download the report.

Gillian completes audiometric technician
training!
Gillian just returned from Portland
where she completed training and certification as an audiometric
technician. Naturally, she graduated at the top of her class.
You'll see her helping out more in the office with testing in
the future. Way to go Gillian!.
Stan Rogers Was The Winner. Stan won our Fall 1999 hearing aid give away. Stan now wears two new complete In-The-Ear digitally programmed hearing aids. Here's what Stan has to say about his new hearing aids:
"I
went to church Sunday and for the first time in years I could
hear the services. Now I can have company and be able to carry
on a descent conversation with them. How wonderful for me and
also them"

Gillian
Attends Hearing Aid workshop.
In December,
Gillian attended a workshop at the Siemens hearing aid factory
in Los Angeles. It was a great opportunity for her to learn
how a hearing aid lab operates.
Here
is what Gillian had to say!
I recently had the opportunity to travel to Siemens Hearing in
Cerittos, CA. Christie and I were invited to get a more in depth
understanding of the repair and manufacture of hearing aids.
We followed an aid through the steps of manufacturing, starting
with the pouring of the shell and ending with the shipment of
the aid to the dispenser, and all the quality control check points
the aid went through in between. Brent King, a trainer for Siemens
showed us first hand the materials used to make the aid. He demonstrated
tips and tricks on how to repair holes in the hearing aids using
an ultra strong UV material. The material is the same as is used
in the shell of the hearing aid so patched are almost invisible
and very strong. He set the patches using a UV gun, similar to
the guns used in a dentist office to seal the bonding on teeth.
He showed us how to replace the string on a CIC and patch holes
in vents in the office to avoid sending the aid in for repair.
Brent also talked to us about the future of hearing aids with
soft shell CICs and removable faceplates in the not too distant
future. Christie and I were also treated to an afternoon of shopping
in Beverly Hills and a day at Disneyland. That too was a learning
experience. We learned that if you give a famous person change
for a parking meter, he has to let you take his picture and it
takes more than one day to see Disneyland. But that is another
story.
